When a British ship is sunk in foreign waters, the world’s superpowers begin a feverish race to find its cargo: a nuclear submarine control system. And 007 is thrust into one of his most riveting adventures as he rushes to Meteora* to retrieve the stolen system and prevent global devastation. So reads the film description of one of the best Bonds “For Your Eyes Only”.
To do the climbing to the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, Bond, the James Bond, resorted to moderate drinking to calm his nerves. We had breakfast and a frappé instead. Sure, we did not climb the pinnacle to save the world, but our climbing was not less dramatic – thanks to the sore muscles Mount Olymp left us. Seriously, we have never been in such pain before. They say: “No one comes close to 007 when 007 comes close to you.” The pain made us feel his presence.
We are thankful that James Bond prepared the site for us. There were no monks trying to sabotage our visit. They did not hang their washing out nor did they try to cover the monastery to spoil the view. The monks did all that to disturb the film shootings despite Roger Moore told them politely that he ‘once was a saint himself’. We only had to pay an entrance fee and were greeted friendly.
*Meteora counts six spectacular monasteries on top of huge rocky pinnacles. It is one of the most gobsmacking examples of Greek Orthodox culture we have seen. Enjoy the view!
